A Sustainable Career Achieved Through Skills, Training and Support

December 29, 2025

After immigrating to Canada from Uganda in 2014, Naomi was determined to build a stable life for her family. She began working at a fast-food restaurant, where her strong work ethic and leadership abilities helped her advance into a management role. At the same time, Naomi volunteered as a Teacher’s Assistant at her church in Surrey, nurturing a growing passion for working with children and supporting learning environments

Balancing full-time work while raising two children eventually led to burnout, and Naomi stepped away from employment to focus on her family. By 2022, she was unemployed and uncertain about her next steps. Although she had valuable experience, Naomi lacked formal certification and felt unsure about how to transition into a new career  in Canada that aligned with her interests and provided a healthy work-life balance.

That’s when Naomi connected with the Langley WorkBC Centre.

Through WorkBC Langley, Naomi received individualized job search assistance and career coaching that helped her clarify her goals and identify viable career pathways. Motivated by her desire to be present for her children and inspired by her experience working with young learners, Naomi expressed interest in pursuing a role in education, particularly within school or before- and after-school care settings.

Her Career Coach referred her to the WorkBC Skills for Success program, where Naomi strengthened her confidence, employability skills, and readiness for training. With continued guidance and support from WorkBC Langley, Naomi was able to pursue formal training and successfully complete an Education Assistant certification program in October 2025.

Today, Naomi is employed as an Education Assistant at a school in Langley. She is thriving in a meaningful role that aligns with her passion for working with children while providing the stability and work-life balance she was seeking. Naomi credits the professional support and encouragement she received from WorkBC Langley as instrumental in helping her overcome barriers and achieve her career goals.
