Building a New Future: A Client’s Journey to a Career in Childcare

July 7, 2025

This client is a recent immigrant and survivor of abuse. A newcomer, she carried not only the weight of her past but also the hope of building a better future. With a significant gap in her work history, no Canadian experience, and a lack of understanding of cultural norms and job interviews, finding meaningful employment felt overwhelming.

She turned to the Langley WorkBC Centre for help and found more than just employment services. She found people who listened, understood, and guided her forward with compassion and care. Recognizing her interest in working with children, her WorkBC Career Advisor referred her to the EMPOW3R program, a specialized training program designed for adults who have experienced forms of violence. The program helps individuals become licenced childcare workers in settings such as school-age care, drop-in centres, and licensed facilities.

Through EMPOW3R, she received training, learned how to navigate the Canadian workplace, and developed the interview skills and confidence she needed to take the next step. With each milestone, she gained not only new skills but also a renewed sense of purpose.

Thanks to her hard work and the support of Langley WorkBC, she is now well on her way to becoming a licensed childcare worker.
