From Job Seeker to Thriving Entrepreneur
April 26, 2025
After seven years of hands-on experience in the metal fabrication industry, Trevor had built a solid foundation of skills through on-the-job learning. In 2017, he took a step further and completed the Metal Fabrication Foundation Level 1 program. However, despite his experience and training, he faced a significant barrier – without Red Seal certification, he was unable to secure stable employment in a highly competitive job market.
The situation was made even more challenging by personal responsibilities. Trevor disclosed that his wife struggles with mental health issues, and he is the sole provider for their family. Determined to find a way forward, he conducted a four-month-long job search but was unable to find sustainable employment.
In need of support, Trevor turned to WorkBC Langley, where his journey took a positive turn. WorkBC provided comprehensive living supports, enabling him to participate in the Self-Employment Program from June 17, 2024, to February 27, 2025. This program equipped him with the tools, knowledge, and mentorship needed to transform his skills into a viable business.
With the support of WorkBC, Trevor officially launched his metal fabrication business on February 27, 2025. He initially focused on residential railings, but his reputation for quality craftsmanship quickly opened doors to more specialized work. Soon, he began taking on custom metalwork projects for vintage automobiles – a niche market that continues to grow. Today, he enjoys a steady stream of clients eager to have him work on their vehicles; he now has to manage a waitlist to the demand for his skills.
Thanks to his dedication and the comprehensive support from WorkBC Langley, Trevor has built a thriving business, secured long-term contracts, and achieved financial stability for his family. His story is a powerful example of how targeted employment supports can help individuals overcome barriers and create lasting success.
