From Setback to Success: How WorkBC Langley Helped Scott Get Back on the Road

June 14, 2025

After spending over 40 years behind the wheel as a Class 1 long-haul truck driver, Scott, 62, faced a life-changing moment. A serious heart condition led to the suspension of his Class 1 driver’s licence—effectively ending the only career he had ever known. With limited work experience outside of trucking, no personal computer, minimal digital skills, and a resume that needed serious improvement and limited job search skills, Scott was left unsure of how to begin again.

Referred to WorkBC Langley by ICBC, Scott walked through the doors of the Centre ready to take on the next chapter. The WorkBC team quickly assessed his needs and built a plan to help him re-enter the workforce.

Scott participated in Employment Support Services (ESS) workshops focused on resume and cover letter development. He also received one-on-one assistance to tailor his resume for specific job postings and navigate online job applications—something he had never done before.

Without a computer of his own, Scott became a regular at the WorkBC Langley resource room, visiting at least three times a week. He learned how to use Microsoft Word and Office 365 to edit his own resume, growing his digital confidence with every visit.

To expand his job options, WorkBC referred Scott to the Archway STRIDE program, where he completed a 2-day Traffic Control Person (TCP) course and earned his TCP ticket. Scott also attended multiple hiring fairs at the Langley and Cloverdale WorkBC Centres, putting his new skills and tools into action.

All his hard work paid off. Scott has now been hired by Lake Excavating Ltd. in Williams Lake, BC, as a haul truck driver. He earns $35 per hour and works a rotation of seven days on, seven days off. He proudly shared how grateful he is for the support he received at every step of the way.

Scott is very grateful for all of the assistance and support that he received from the WorkBC team.
