How Langley WorkBC Centre Helped Me Succeed

July 25, 2024

For nearly two years, I worked weekends and occasionally a few weekdays as a Deli associate at Walmart. While it wasn’t in my field of expertise, it paid the bills. Throughout this time, I requested full-time hours, but my employer was unable to accommodate this. This challenge, coupled with language barriers and my limited understanding of the Canadian labor market, made finding a suitable job very difficult.

My name is Roxana, and my journey toward a fulfilling career in Canada has been filled with obstacles and learning experiences. Initially, my language skills were a significant barrier. I am currently enrolled in English classes and have reached Canadian Benchmark Level 8 (CBL 8). Another challenge was navigating the Canadian job market, where roles like receptionists in dental clinics, legal offices, or veterinary practices often require specific certifications. Without these, finding an office job seemed almost impossible.

This is where the Langley WorkBC Centre offered hope and guidance. As a newcomer, their support has been invaluable. Here’s how Centre helped me:

1. Resume Preparation
WorkBC taught me how to craft a resume that aligns with Canadian standards. This was a crucial step, as a well-prepared resume significantly improves the chances of getting an interview.

2. Interview Techniques
My Career Coaches provided me with tips and sample questions and answers for job interviews. This helped me to feel confident and prepared. Understanding how to navigate job interviews in Canada made a big difference in my performance.

3. Job Opportunities
WorkBC regularly sent me job opportunities in various fields. This broadened my horizons and revealed potential roles I hadn't considered.

4. Job Fairs
I was invited to numerous job fairs where I could apply for positions and have on-the-spot interviews. These events were excellent for networking and gaining immediate feedback from potential employers.

5. Emotional and Practical Support
The most significant benefit was the support and encouragement I received. I never felt alone in my job search. The team at WorkBC, especially Amber McFetridge and Priyanka Arora, provided guidance, patience, and a warm, human touch. Their dedication and support were instrumental in restoring my faith and confidence.

My New Role
On July 18, I was hired by Options Community Services as a Settlement Worker (Spanish Speaker). Although it is a part-time, temporary position ending in March 2025, this opportunity allows me to gain valuable experience in a field I am passionate about – serving others. This role is a stepping stone towards securing similar positions in the future.

I am deeply grateful to WorkBC for their support and to Amber and Priyanka for their unwavering assistance. Their sorority demonstrated throughout these months have shown me how great this country is; this has made me have faith and think: “After this sad and long road full of uncertainty, I can believe that everything will be fine”.

Thank you, WorkBC, for helping me on this journey.
