On His Way to Building a Career and Life in Canada

July 30, 2021

Joe recently immigrated to Canada from China. With very limited English, finding work for Joe was difficult but he was able to find seasonal work on a blueberry farm. Joe was very keen to find more more permanent work but he also wanted to find a job where he could practice his English. The Business Community Liaison from the Langley WorkBC Centre introduced Joe to the Centre and its range of employment services and supports.

As a new immigrant, Joe has no personal or professional networks in Canada and had no idea how to conduct a Canadian-style job search. He needed help to build a resume, to understand the interview process and build some interview skills, and he needed to learn how to market himself and communicate with potential employers. Joe attended job search workshops and received support from his Career Coach to build his resume and skills. The Centre’s Employment Placement Specialist assisted Joe to make contact with Krown Imports and arrange an interview.

Joe was successful in the interview and was hired as a production worker. He is now working full-time and is very happy with his new job; he is working indoors and is able to practice and improve his English language skills.

With the help of the staff at the Langley WorkBC Centre, Joe is in a much better position to build his language and job skills and, ultimately, to build a career and a life in Canada.
