Paul’s Journey Back to Work
January 12, 2026
After facing significant health and personal challenges, Paul found himself unemployed and on income assistance, unsure how to re-enter the workforce. Having last worked in 2023, Paul had previously owned and operated his own landscaping business, but a period of addiction treatment and financial hardship created an extended employment gap. Over time, his certifications and licences had lapsed, making it even more difficult to compete in today’s job market.
In December 2025, Paul reached out to the Langley WorkBC Centre seeking support to rebuild his employability and confidently return to work. He was motivated to get back into the workforce but needed guidance, updated credentials, and an employer willing to recognize his potential.
How WorkBC Helped
The Langley WorkBC team worked closely with Paul to create a tailored employment plan that addressed both his immediate needs and long-term goals. Through WorkBC services, Paul:
- Participated in Prepare for Employment Workshops, strengthening his job search skills and workplace readiness
- Completed Emergency First Aid and Forklift Training, renewing critical certifications and expanding his employability
- Received Job Start financial support, helping reduce barriers during his transition back to work
WorkBC staff also provided direct employer connections. Paul was introduced to the owner of TDK Doors, leading to an interview for a Production Lead position. Recognizing Paul’s transferable skills, strong work ethic, and readiness to learn, the employer offered him the role through the Wage Subsidy program.
A Successful Outcome
The Wage Subsidy allowed Paul to gain hands-on experience in a new field while rebuilding his confidence and re-establishing himself in the workforce. With the right supports in place, Paul successfully transitioned from income assistance to employment in a stable, supportive work environment.
