WorkBC Helps Man with Mental and Physical Health Challenges Find Rewarding Position
January 23, 2023
Michael moved to Langley, BC from the Interior in 2022 for a work opportunity that ended up not materializing. After past success in working with WorkBC in the Kootenays, Michael reached out to the WorkBC Langley Centre for help in finding work.
Prior to moving, Michael worked at Wal-Mart as a Warehouse Associate, a Merchandiser at Home Depot, and Bakery Assistant at Ferraro Foods, over 8 years. Prior to this, he worked at Selkirk Beverages for 2 years.
Michael experiences challenges with his mental health. He has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia and experiences challenges related to a learning disability, anxiety, and dysthymia. While working at Wal-Mart, Michael suffered a series of back injuries. He wanted to find a position that would not cause re-injury. He was also looking for an employment opportunity that would supplement his Person With a Disability (PWD) benefits.
WorkBC Langley provided Michael with Disability Support in searching for employment. First, Michael completed a Psychological Vocational Assessment to evaluate his cognitive strengths. This assessment also provided insights and suggestions for supporting him in areas of struggle. After assessments, Michael worked with his career coach Holly to apply for positions offering flexibility to grow from part time to full time hours when he was ready. WorkBC also connected Michael with a clinical counsellor to help prepare him to transition to work.
Michael had expressed that he really enjoyed working in a grocery store in the past, so Holly sent Michael’s resume to Otter Co-op. Once Michael completed his phone interview, he was asked to come in that same day for a tour and to begin onboarding. He is now working as a Grocery Associate there and is thriving. He really enjoys the work environment.
The experience for Michael in using WorkBC for help finding work was a positive one for him:
“It was a great experience to work with Holly from WorkBC. I found employment quicker than I
expected, and I recommend them to help your search for employment in the Langley area!”
Thank you, Michael. We loved working with you and we’re happy that you’re happy in your new work role.
