Updates to Allowable Work Hours for International Students

May 4, 2024

An update this week from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) concerns the work hours of international students.  The federal government has announced the end of the temporary policy that allowed international students to work more than 20 hours per week off-campus. As of April 30, 2024, international students can work only 20 hours per week in local businesses. They will remain able to work up to full-time during scheduled academic breaks (like summer).

This change directly affects businesses employing international students and those who might typically hire them.  Starting this Fall, the government plans to increase the allowable work hours to 24 hours per week.
